K. A. Wood Stages 2005

Robert Dick and Barry Green won this High Moor Motor Club event bringing their Darrian T9 home seven seconds ahead of the Lotus Banks Europa of runners-up Stuart Deeley and Chris Jones.

Seventy-five cars made the start of this ANWCC, SD34 and F1000 counter at Three Sisters, where the early battle for honours also included the Focus Sti of Andrew Barker/Steven Mort, John Harland/Rob Soper in the Darrian T90 and Corsa crew David Burns/Steve Hallmark.

A problematic gearbox ended Barker’s run after SS3 whilst a troublesome hub caused Burns to take a maximum on SS4. It wasn’t a good day for Bruce Edwards and Jim Smith, after stage maximums on the opening pair of tests it just went from bad to worse when the Scots crew crashed their Darrian T90 into a tyre wall and into retirement on SS3.

Brian Whiting/Steve Harvey were another crew to retire at this point with differential problems in the Ford Fiesta.

A second separated Dick and Deeley following SS4 with Harland a further four seconds down but nine seconds to the good on fourth placed Ian Savage/Gary Heslop in the Lancer Evo 6. By the end of the following stage the top two were on matching times as the chasing pack lost ground.

Dick took a one second advantage following SS6 as Harland and Savage secured their places with Geoff Roberts/Gareth Twiss (Escort Mk I) looking comfortable in fifth.

Tim Whiting/Phil Longley had been on course for a top ten finish but clutch trouble added their Escort Mk II to the retirement list.

The hard charging Mark Gamble/Dale Owen rolled their Peugeot 106 into retirement on stage nine despite the marshals getting the car back on its wheels in double quick time.

Dick took a three second lead into the final stage finally sweeping to a seven second victory with the rest of the top five finishing in the expected order.

Carwyn Ellis/Ed Jones (Escort Mk II) snatched sixth from Martin Farrar/Andy Ward (MG ZR) by virtue of the first stage tie-breaker.

Formula 1000

Paul Bebe/Stuart Thomas were convincing winners in the Volkswagen Polo but the contest for second place was much closer.

Keith Markham/Simon Davies (Diahatsu Charade) eventually took the runners up spot finishing a second ahead of the Micra of Ken Rowlands/Michael Hughes. Rob Eastwood/Chris Pinches finished a further four seconds adrift in the Mini.

A trio of Micras follwed with Peter O’Dougherty proving he’s not just a mean navigator finishing fifth, a second ahead of Mark Livesey with Steve Johnson settling for seventh.

The top ten was completed by a trio of drivers more used to four-wheel drive machinery. David Wright, Alan Causey and Richard Banks all found the the competition to be just as tough at the back of the field.

The Formula 1000’s superb finishing rate continued with only one of the fourteen starters retiring. The unlucky parties on this occasion being Graham Thomas and Matt Gregory with a mystery electrical problem in their Peugeot 205.
